Will I Bruise After an Injectable Treatment

Will I Bruise After an Injectable Treatment? (And How to Prevent It)

Injectable treatments such as anti-wrinkle injections, dermal fillers, skin boosters are among the most popular non-surgical aesthetic procedures. They’re fast, effective and require little to no downtime.

However, one of the most common questions we hear at Verve Medical Aesthetics is:

“Will I bruise after my treatment?”

The short answer: you might but not always. And when bruising does occur, there are plenty of ways to minimise it and support faster healing.

Why Bruising Happens After Injectables

Bruising is simply blood from tiny capillaries leaking under the skin. Because injectables use a needle or cannula, a small amount of trauma to the skin is possible this is normal and usually mild.

Several factors influence whether you bruise:

1. Your individual skin and blood vessels

Some people naturally bruise more easily.

2. Medications or supplements

Blood-thinning medications or supplements like ibuprofen, aspirin, fish oils, vitamin E, garlic, or ginkgo biloba can increase the risk.

3. The area being treated

Some areas of the face (such as the lips or tear troughs) have more delicate vessels.

4. Technique and practitioner experience

Skilled injectors with advanced anatomical knowledge significantly reduce the risk, this is always our standard at Verve.

How Long Does Bruising Last?

If bruising occurs, it’s typically:

  • Mild to moderate

  • Visible for 2–5 days

  • Easily concealed with makeup from the next day (unless advised otherwise)

Lips and under-eye areas may take slightly longer to settle.

How to Reduce Bruising Before Your Appointment

1. Avoid blood-thinning medications (if safe for you)

If you can, avoid:

  • Ibuprofen

  • Aspirin

  • Naproxen

  • Fish oil

  • Vitamin E

  • Garlic or ginkgo supplements

Always check with your GP before stopping any prescribed medication.

2. Limit alcohol for 24 hours before treatment

Alcohol thins the blood and increases the risk of bruising.

3. Stay hydrated

Healthy, hydrated skin recovers much more quickly.

4. Consider taking arnica

Arnica tablets or gel can support healing and reduce bruising in some patients.

5. Arrive calm and relaxed

Stress increases blood flow and may increase the chance of bruising.

How to Reduce Bruising After Your Injectable Treatment

1. Apply a cold compress

Use for 10–15 minutes at a time to reduce swelling and soothe the skin.

2. Avoid touching or massaging the area

(Unless your practitioner has advised intentional massage for certain treatments.)

3. Skip the gym for 24 hours

Exercise increases circulation and can worsen bruising.

4. Avoid saunas, steam rooms, and hot baths

Heat dilates blood vessels, making bruising more likely.

5. Reduce alcohol for 24 hours after treatment

Again, to minimise blood thinning.

6. Use arnica

Topical arnica supplements may speed healing.

7. Use mineral concealer if needed

From the next day onwards, a mineral-based concealer is safe and effective.
