What Causes Stretch Marks?
Stretch marks, also known as striae, occur when the skin is stretched rapidly, causing the collagen and elastin fibers in the dermis to tear. Common causes include:
Pregnancy – rapid growth of the abdomen and breasts
Rapid weight gain or loss
Puberty – growth spurts in teenagers
Bodybuilding – quick muscle growth
Genetics – some people are more prone to stretch marks
Hormonal changes – such as those associated with corticosteroids or certain medical conditions
These marks often start as red, purple, or pink lines and gradually fade to a silvery or white appearance over time.
