what is hyperpigmentation?

Hyperpigmentation is a common skin concern that is caused by an overproduction of melanin. It is characterised by the appearance of darker patches, spots or areas on the skin. It can appear on the face, hands, arms, back, and chest.

There are several common causes of hyperpigmentation, including sun exposure, hormonal changes, skin trauma, and certain medications. Sun exposure can cause darker patches of skin due to an increase in melanin production as a result of UV exposure. Hormonal changes can also cause an increase in melanin production, particularly during pregnancy. Skin trauma, such as cuts, scratches or burns, can also cause darker patches of skin. Certain medications, such as antibiotics and birth control pills can also contribute.

Hyperpigmentation Treatments Options

There are several types of hyperpigmentation, including melasma, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and solar lentigines
  • Melasma is the most common type of hyperpigmentation, characterised by symmetrical darker patches on the face.
  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is caused by skin trauma and is characterised by darker patches of skin where the trauma occurred.
  • Solar lentigines are caused by sun exposure and are characterised by darker patches of skin on the face, hands, arms, and chest.
At our skin clinics in Belfast and Bangor, we offer bespoke consultations to assess the type and severity of hyperpigmentation. We can then recommend a tailored treatment plan for our clients, using either chemical peels or medical grade skincare. Chemical peels are a type of skin treatment that removes the top layer of skin, allowing new, healthy skin to take its place. At home skincare treatments can also help to reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation by brightening the skin and preventing further melanin production. After a bespoke consultation, our team of experienced skincare professionals can recommend the most suitable treatment plan to reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation.
