How to Reduce Swelling After Lip Fillers

At Verve Medical Aesthetics, with clinics located in Belfast and Bangor, we understand how important it is for our patients to achieve natural, beautiful results with minimal downtime. Dr Mark McCoubrey, our experienced aesthetic doctor, performs a range of treatments including PDO thread lifts, skin boosters, Sunekos, Profhilo, and dermal fillers, including lip augmentation.

While lip fillers are a quick and effective way to enhance volume, shape, and definition, a common side effect is post-treatment swelling. This is entirely normal and usually temporary, but there are several steps you can take to help reduce swelling quickly and comfortably.

Below, we share our top tips for managing swelling after lip filler treatments.

Why Does Swelling Occur After Lip Fillers?

Swelling is a normal inflammatory response as your body reacts to the injection of filler into delicate lip tissue. It may peak within the first 24–48 hours and typically settles over the next few days. Swelling can vary from person to person, depending on factors like your body’s healing response, the type of filler used, and how much product was injected.

10 Tips to Reduce Swelling After Lip Fillers

1. Apply a Cold Compress

Gently applying a cold pack or ice wrapped in a clean cloth can help reduce inflammation and constrict blood vessels, easing swelling. Avoid applying ice directly to the lips, as this may cause irritation or even damage the skin.

2. Sleep Elevated

Keep your head elevated on extra pillows when you sleep during the first night or two. This promotes fluid drainage and helps prevent excess swelling.

3. Avoid Heat and Intense Exercise

Steer clear of hot environments (like saunas, steam rooms, and hot showers) and strenuous exercise for at least 24–48 hours post-treatment. Heat and increased circulation can worsen swelling and bruising.

4. Stay Hydrated

Drink plenty of water to support your body’s healing process. Well-hydrated skin heals faster and more effectively.

5. Avoid Alcohol and Salty Foods

Alcohol can thin the blood and increase your risk of bruising and swelling. Similarly, salty foods may cause water retention, making swelling more pronounced. Try to avoid both for at least 24 hours after your treatment.

6. No Touching or Massaging

Unless advised by Dr. McCoubrey, do not massage or press on the treated area, as this could displace the filler or aggravate swelling.

7. Take Arnica

These natural supplements are known for their anti-inflammatory and bruising-reducing properties. Ask our team if they are appropriate for you before taking them.

8. Be Gentle with Skincare and Makeup

For the first 24 hours, avoid applying makeup directly to the lips. After that, choose gentle, non-irritating products to avoid stressing the area while it heals.

9. Avoid Flying Soon After Treatment

Changes in cabin pressure and air travel may exacerbate swelling. Try to avoid flying for at least 48 hours after your lip filler appointment.

10. Follow Your Aftercare Plan

Dr McCoubrey provides a personalised aftercare plan to ensure your treatment results are optimal and your recovery is smooth. Always follow his guidance closely.
